2019-2020 20% Time
Genius Hour
Every Friday my class will be doing a 20% time project. This project is where we pick something to do every throughout the year on Fridays. For my 20% time project, I am making a scrapbook about me and my first year of middle school. In order to get your project approved you needed to make a pitch this is where you state what you are doing and how you are going to add to it or work on it and what is the point of it, but it can only be 30 seconds long! It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be once I had finished presenting it I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders because that was basically the hard part of trying to get them to let you do the whole project. Every week I will add a new section about me or something exciting that happened that week in my middle school year. I would first start off the few sections talking about me and how I am at the beginning of the school year and as I go on and important things happen that changed about me will be put into the scrapbook. At the end of the year, I will present the scrapbook showing how I was from the beginning to the end of the year and what challenges I went through.

The last few weeks I have been looking for a mentor to help me out on my 20% Time Project. First I had to look online to see who would be a good mentor for me, someone who was really good at crafts. I went on youtube and did find someone but sadly the person I emailed didn't answer or accept my request. I decided to ask my sister since I knew that she was really good at crafts and has done many scrapbooks before and it would be easier to contact her than a stranger. I emailed her and got yes! Once I knew I had a mentor I started to plan out what I was going to put in my scrapbook, now that I have an idea of what to do I am getting all my supplies. Right now I have a plain scrapbook so I can put as much creativity as I can to this project. I am really excited to see how this process will turn out.
Last week, for my 20% time project I started to decorate the cover of my scrapbook with washi tape. Washi tape is this tape that has different decorations on it., the type of decoration I used was striped in the color gold, silver, and black. Today I am going to continue to decorate it some more with letters saying something like "Natalia's 7th Grade Adventure" and want to get glitter or confetti some type of crafts that have different variations of color to make it very unique and memorable.

Last week, I continued to work on my cover for the scrapbook. I didn't get to do much since our classes last Friday were very short, but I was able to add the same washi tape design on the back the way I had it in the front. This week I really want to finish my cover so that I can start planning where everything is going to go in the book. I wrote out on paper "Natalia's 7th Grade adventure" last week like I said I wanted on the cover and am going to put it on the cover. Once I have done that I am going to leave it like that so I can get started on the inside, in the middle of the process I am going to be adding more to the cover from my different experiences.

Last week, I finished my cover for my scrapbook and got more supplies to use. I cut the words out of the paper with a type of bubble or cloud around it, added some color to it, and glued it on the cover. The title is colorful and is what I wanted since colors remind me of adventure and this year is going to be an adventure. The title is on and I am ready to get started on the inside. Even though I finished the cover I will still add a few more things to it as I go on through the year collecting things that would fit perfectly for the cover.

Last week, I started to work on the inside with the new supplies I got glitter glue sticks and sticker words. I decided to start off the scrapbook with a little about me so that way at the end of the school year I can update what's changed about me. For the cover of the section, I am saying "About Me" with a picture of me. Then I went to the second page and put the actual information about me such as my age, birthday, school, and grade. For the glitter clue sticks, I used the colors orange, green, pink, purple, blue, and silver, for the sticker letters its this cold glitter color. This definitely added a lot of color to the book and I'm glad that I at least have something in there now to go off of.

Last week, I started another page about my friends before this school year started. I am doing this to see how much changes in my life, such as friends, as I go on through the school year. I started it off with a tittle made of sticker letters that are gold and have glitter, spelling "Friends In Beginning". I was also looking at my previous reflection and adding pictures to them so they were ready to be graded. That was all I did last week, edit my reflections and started off the new section with the title.

Last week I decorated a page which is going to be about my friends from last year and how nervous I was to make new friends. I wrote a little paragraph about how I felt knowing that I was going to meet different new people and make new friends, I was an introvert before I entered middle school. A lot of kids are usually nervous before moving on to middle school, hopefully, one day in the future I can show someone nervous about their first year that I and others felt the same way but then ended up having a great time. I also drew little designs all over the page like squigglies, lines, hearts, and dots with different colors.

Last week, I cut and glued on the paper designs that I drew onto the scrapbook page. I used the wave design, colorful dots, and words saying, friends. I glued the designs on around the border and left the room in the middle for pictures of them, I am going to be adding a lot of photos into the scrapbook for other pages as well but I'm waiting until I finish collecting all the pictures I need so that I can print them all out at once. I then started on the other page of my new friends and how I met new amazing people, for the title of this page I didn't have my sticker letters so I wrote in on a piece of paper, cut it out, and glued it.

I looked for some pictures last week that I already had so I can know how many more I'm going to need to complete the scrapbook. I was able to find 3 polaroid pictures from last year with some of my friends in them which I can use for the page of my old friends to see if my friend's group changed or stayed the same. So I glued the pictures on and used a type of washi tape that has blue rhinestones on it as a border for the pictures to use as decorations. I am not fully done with this page and will add more pictures once I find more.

Last week I contacted my mentor to show her what I have done so far in my project. I sent a few pictures of my pages in the book. I also wrote down names on pink and purple construction paper of the friends that were in the Polaroid pictures that I found. I wrote down their names with a little design and cut them out. I then proceeded to glue them on to the page next to their pictures, after I started looking for more pictures that I could add on of my other friends.

My mentor responded to my email with some of my scrapbook pictures by saying that it was good and that I should keep it up. I also got some more stickers and supplies from Michael s to help me decorate it more since it doesn't have as many pops of color that I would like it to have.

Last week I added a new page to the book for the renaissance where I'm going to put my GPA and a picture of me with my shirt on. I wrote on purple construction paper renaissance, cut it out and glued them to the scrapbook page surrounded by school-related stickers. The renaissance was pretty important to me since I got recognition for my 4.0 and so that's why I want to keep it in my memory scrapbook. Last week was also valentines day, the day my friends and I get each other gifts to show our appreciation for each other. I am going to put in the book what did and the pictures I that onto a Valentine page. This way I can remember the good memories I had on Valentine's with my friends.

Last week, I started to work on the Valentine page. I got red construction paper since the color most people will think about first for this holiday is red, I made sure that I cut it the size of the folder that holds the decoration in the book. I wrote on a white paper Valentine's for the title of the page. I really like Valentine because I get to celebrate it with my friends so I took pictures of what my friends got me and a picture of when my friends and I went out for food after school so I plan on printing those pictures out as well to put it on the page.

Last week, I prepared Valentine's page for pictures. I glued the tittle to the construction paper and added some other designs like hearts and squiggles with glitter glue. I feel like I keep pushing the date to get my pictures printed and I don't think that I have done enough to try and get them. So I'm telling myself that if I don't get them printed like in a week or so I'm limiting myself to my favorite food and I'm only going to eat it once a month.

The past week, I printed some photos out just like I said I would. Some of the photos include my new friends for my page dedicated to them. I also printed out a few pictures for the valentines and renaissance page. I still have not finished printing the pictures but I'm still glad that I have some pictures to give it a scrapbook vibe. I feel like I've been a little slow in my process so I think I'm going to start working on it a little bit at home just to catch up to where I would like to be right now.
20% Time is where we students choose a project to do every Friday all school year. I have gone through 3 quarters of the school year doing a scrapbook, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that is all around the world my school has started online and we have all been quarantined. This has brought me to change my project due to the fact that I can't leave for resources and my scrapbook was left at school. My new project is an online collage of all the memories that I was able to catch in a picture from the school year, that way it still is similar to my scrapbook in a way. My scrapbook was meant for me to be able to keep my 7th grade memories as I grew older, I can still do that with my collage filled with the wonderful memories that I was able to have in my short but amazing school year.

I started to look at what websites I can use for my Collage, I have found a few which seem to work pretty well. I am going to make a few to test them out and see which website can give me the best collage. So far I've only had one trouble which is getting my pictures from my phone to my computer before it would work when I just had to connect the two devices with a charger wire but for some reason, it seems to not be working. I plan to figure that out or perhaps another way to insert the pictures in, I can't wait to get started on my actual collage until then I'm gonna experiment hopefully by next week the problem will be resolved.

While I'm still getting a hang of everything and the websites I'm using I want to pick my theme for it all. I want to make it an aesthetic type of look, with sparkles bright colors and almost like its an old tape. I do want to get many of my friends in there so I can look at it and remember everything. I am really excited for this because I feel like its gonna be a nice touch of decoration, I would love to end up printing it out afterward and hanging it up on a wall.

After checking out the different collage websites I picked one that was the best for me to work with. It is the third link spark adobe, I installed the app on my phone where I am going to make the collage. I tried to do it on my computer but for some reason, I can't seem to be able to connect my phone with the computer to upload pictures the way I used to. So the easiest way was for me to do it is on my phone, I'm going to try a few more things so I can upload some of the collages I already made while testing the app out. While testing I found out that the limit of pictures on each collage is 16, I obviously need more pictures than that so I decided to do something a little different. I'm going to make a collage for every moment or event I had in this school year or the friends involved. For example, let's say I do one for my closest friends, the school dances, my different classes ext. I'll then end up with a number of collages of every different thing that I decide to keep memories from.

I made a semi collage of the Renaissance that I had at school. Its where kids get recognized for the GPA's I was one with a 4.0 so I got an award at an assembly. I didn't have many pictures so that why it is a semi collage but I tried to fill the page up and much as I could, but at least I have something to remind me of this moment.

Last week I didn't get to do much except for write my blog but I feel like I have made much more improvement in adding more pages and with the techniques of decorating. As the year has been continuing I have been able to think of more ideas of what to do like a page of the renaissance and how I got a 4.0, I would also like to do a page of valentines with me and my friends.
